OIT – Telecommunications and Networking to Stop Using Social Security Numbers as Account Numbers
07/17/07
OIT – Telecommunications and Networking (formerly UNITS) is eliminating the use of Social Security Numbers (SSN) as account numbers for Ohio State students, faculty and staff who have billable, personal-use telecommunication services. Billable, personal-use services include telephone, long distance, OSU Wireless-Cellular, cable TV, and OSUWeb.net Internet services.

On July 23, 2007, all student accounts will be converted to OSU BuckID numbers, and all faculty and staff accounts will be converted to OSU Employee ID numbers. The conversion process will occur after normal business hours. New accounts established after July 23 will also be set up with the appropriate new account numbers.

OIT – Telecommunications and Networking is implementing this change to further protect student, faculty and staff’s sensitive personal information. This change is in accord with the university’s proposed Institutional Data Policy.

As of July 24, customers that want to access their personal-use accounts through the Online Account Management (OAM) system to place service orders, view account information or pay bills will need to use their new account number as referenced above. Additionally, customers that pay their monthly billing statements via the Payroll Deduction Service or Debit Payment Service will be automatically converted to the new account numbers and will NOT need to contact Human Resources or their banks regarding the change. Customers that pay by phone or by mail should also reference their new account numbers on all other acceptable payment forms (e.g., checks, money orders, credit cards, etc.).

Customers with questions about this change should contact the OIT Help Desk at 688-HELP (select option 2), or by e-mail at units@osu.edu.
