New International Calling Rates Take Effect May 1 04/25/07
New international calling rates for the university’s long distance service from OIT take effect on May 1, 2007. Overall, customers will enjoy lower rates when calling most international locations. Additionally, most international locations will now have two different per-minute rates, one rate for calls made to traditional landline phones and a slightly higher rate for calls made to mobile devices. Customers will be billed the appropriate per-minute rate based on whether the call reaches a landline phone or a mobile device.
Charging lower rates for calls to landline phones and slightly higher rates for calls to mobile devices has become common practice in the long distance industry. In general, calls to traditional landline phones overseas are less costly to terminate than calls to mobile devices. Offering different rate structures based on this enables companies to provide customers with choices and, ultimately, lower rates.
International calling is available through OIT’s Traditional Long Distance service used for business and personal calling, and through the Administrative Calling Card used by university departments. The domestic long distance rate for these services will remain at 4.5˘ per minute. All rates are in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, no matter if the call is placed from campus or another location in the 50 States.
