Students Living in Undergraduate,
Residence Halls

Standard Telephone Services
The OIT – Telecommunications and Networking office delivers standard telephone services and basic cable TV in all undergraduate residence hall rooms on the Columbus campus. The following telephone services, along with basic cable TV, are provided as part of your undergraduate housing contract with Student Affairs and will already be active upon moving into your room:

  • Local telephone service* with touch-tone dialing capability and a telephone number that can be directly dialed from campus and off campus numbers.  The telephone number assigned to your room is listed on the telephone jack. You can also verify your room’s 10-digit telephone number by plugging a phone into the active jack and then dialing 2-7777.
  • Free, unlimited campus and local calling capabilities
  • 911 emergency access to University Police
  • Caller ID* and Call Waiting telephone features

*NOTE: You need to provide your own telephone instrument and cords. A telephone with a Caller ID display is required to use the Caller ID feature.

Optional Telephone Services
Low-priced long distance and cellular phones are optional services available that you can order through our office for additional fees. Long distance options include Traditional Long Distance, 500 and 2000 Bundle Minute Plans, Personal 800 Service and Prepaid International Calling. Our competitively priced cellular service, OSU Wireless, offers numerous plans and phones and a low overage rate. Click on each service listed to learn more.

Call Waiting
This standard telephone feature allows you to answer a second incoming telephone call, while temporarily placing the first caller on hold.

How To Use Call Waiting
While talking with the first caller, you will hear a beep tone in your ear. Simply depress either the switchhook or flash/link button on your telephone. This will place your first caller on hold and connect you to your second incoming caller. After you have finished your conversation with the second caller, depress the switchhook or flash/link button again on the telephone and you will be reconnected with your first caller.

You can temporarily deactivate the Call Waiting feature by dialing *74 before placing a call. This can be especially important to use when you wish to transmit computer data across your telephone line. Call Waiting is automatically reactivated when you place your next call.

Caller ID
New for Fall 2006, Caller ID is a standard feature on the telephone line in your undergraduate residence hall room. The service provides telephone number identification only for incoming local and campus calls. A telephone instrument with a Caller ID display is required to utilize this feature.
