OIT - Telecommunications and Networking is the provider of cable television service to OSU residential and departmental buildings on the Columbus campus.* Cable services currently available on the Columbus campus include Basic Cable Service, Free (In-the-Clear) Digital Channels and International Digital Channels. Additionally, our office also provides cable services to South Campus Gateway Apartments, Mansfield, Newark, Wooster and other select Columbus off-campus housing areas.
Basic Cable Service
Our Basic Cable line-up has over 70 channels and includes all the major networks, in addition to many popular entertainment and educational channels. Our Columbus channel line-up also includes the locally produced Campus Information Channel. This OSU channel broadcasts campus and local area information and events, and offers a forum to reach Ohio State students.
Basic Cable TV is provided as a standard service in all Undergraduate Residence Halls and in several professional or graduate housing locations on the Columbus campus at no additional charge. Basic Cable TV can be ordered for other on-campus housing areas and university buildings.* See the “Ordering Service” section for pricing and for details on how to order service in your campus building or residence.
Equipment Needed
Your television and/or VCR equipment must be cable-ready to receive all Basic Cable channels available. If your equipment is not cable-ready, you will not be able to receive all of the Basic Channels available.**
**NOTE: Some cable-ready televisions may only have the capacity to receive up to the first 36 channels. Older cable-ready televisions may also require a converter box to reach any channel higher than channel 36. You should refer to your equipment manuals, or to the place of purchase to determine whether your television, or VCR equipment is cable-ready, or not
Free (In-the-Clear) Digital Channels
Campus cable TV customers with Basic Cable Service also have access to several Free (In-the-Clear) Digital Channels that broadcast at digital (HD/SD) quality. To receive and view these Free (In-the-Clear) Digital Channels, your TV must have a digital tuner that will receive and decode CATV QAM signals. If you have a digital monitor or a TV that does not have the appropriate built-in tuner, you will need to purchase a CATV QAM digital tuner/receiver from a local electronics store.* Digital tuners/receivers are not currently available from OIT.
*NOTE: Depending on the manufacturer of the digital tuner purchased, you may need to enter each free digital channel number into memory manually or you may be able to do a scan of the channels and then save them into your equipment’s memory. In addition, QAM tuners that only retrieve CATV frequencies and ATSC tuners will NOT work; therefore, these tuners are not recommended. If these types of tuners are used, they may not properly retrieve the free digital channels available. Check your equipment manuals from the manufacturer to verify the type of tuner and its capabilities. OIT may bill a customer for time and labor if an OIT technician does a site visit per a customer request and it is determined that the customer’s equipment is the cause of the problem
