Cable TV for Columbus Campus Buildings

OIT provides cable television services to residential and departmental buildings on Ohio State's Columbus campus.* OIT distributes and supports the Basic (Analog) Cable Channels, and several Free (In-the-Clear) Digital Channels. A number of Digital Cable Service Options are also available to Columbus campus customers.

In addition to the Columbus campus, OIT provides cable television services to South Campus Gateway Apartments, Mansfield, Newark, and Wooster Regional Campuses, and several Columbus Off-campus Housing Areas that are owned or managed by Ohio State's Office of Student Life.

Basic (Analog) Cable Channel Line-up

Our Basic (Analog) Channel Line-up offers over 70 channels and includes all the major networks, in addition to many popular entertainment and educational channels. Our Columbus channel line-up also includes the locally produced Campus Information Channel. This OSU channel broadcasts campus and local area information and events, and offers a forum to reach Ohio State students.

The Basic (Analog) Channel Line-up is provided as a standard service in all Undergraduate Housing Areas and in several Professional or Graduate Housing Areas on the Columbus campus at no additional charge. The Basic (Analog) Channel Line-up can be ordered for other on-campus housing areas and university buildings for a monthly fee.* See the “Ordering Service” section for pricing and for details on how to order service in your campus building or residence.

To request a repair for or get assistance with the Basic (Analog) Channel Line-up, contact the IT Service Desk at 688-HELP (4357).

Equipment Needed

Your television and/or VCR equipment must be cable-ready to receive all Basic Cable channels available. If your equipment is not cable-ready, you will not be able to receive all of the Basic Channels available.**

**NOTE: Some cable-ready televisions may only have the capacity to receive up to the first 36 channels. Older cable-ready televisions may also require a converter box to reach any channel higher than channel 36. You should refer to your equipment manuals, or to the place of purchase to determine whether your television, or VCR equipment is cable-ready.

Free (In-the-Clear) Digital Channels

Columbus campus cable TV customers with the Basic (Analog) Channel Line-up also have access to several Free (In-the-Clear) Digital Channels that broadcast at digital (HD/SD) quality. To receive and view these Free (In-the-Clear) Digital Channels, your TV must have a digital tuner that will receive and decode CATV QAM signals. If you have a digital monitor or a TV that does not have the appropriate built-in tuner, you will need to purchase a CATV QAM digital tuner/receiver from a local electronics store.* Digital tuners/receivers are not available from OIT. If you have a Time Warner Cable Digital Set-top Box, you will receive these Free (In-the-Clear) Digital Channels on different channel numbers, which are denoted with ** on the channel line-up.

*NOTE: Depending on the manufacturer of the digital tuner purchased, you may need to enter each free digital channel number into memory manually or you may be able to do a scan of the channels and then save them into your equipment’s memory. In addition, QAM tuners that only retrieve CATV frequencies and ATSC tuners will NOT work; therefore, these tuners are not recommended. If these types of tuners are used, they may not properly retrieve the free digital channels available. Check your equipment manuals from the manufacturer to verify the type of tuner and its capabilities. OIT may bill a customer for time and labor if an OIT technician does a site visit per a customer request and it is determined that the customer’s equipment is the cause of the problem.
